The Helper of the Fatherless

“But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless.” Psalm 10:14 (ESV)

What a glorious thought--the Creator God who sustains the universe takes note of the helpless orphan. From an earthly standpoint, the orphan's plight is desperate--without defense, without inheritance, and without physical protection. Even more tragic is the spiritual plight of those without a Heavenly Father by the adoption that is in Jesus Christ. The Bible actually teaches that those without a saving relationship in Jesus Christ and, therefore, without a relationship to God as their Father, are then left with a wicked spiritual father--the evil one himself, who actually seeks to devour his own rather than protect.

Think of your Plight: Your spiritual father, we first meet as a serpent in the garden...
  • Your spiritual father enslaves his children.
  • He is a cruel taskmaster- 8:34
  • Your spiritual father is the Tempter – Matthew 4:3
  • Your spiritual father is "Filled with fury" - Revelation 12:12
  • Your spiritual father is a killer, a Murderer – John 8:44
  • He is a Destroyer – I Corinthians 10:5, 6, 10
  • He is the Father of Lies. Lying is his native language – John 8:44
  • He is a "Deceiver – Revelation 20:10
  • Your spiritual father is an Accuser – Revelation 12:10 - You can see this in the Pharisees.
  • Your spiritual father's name is Devil – (meaning slanderer) – Matthew 25:41
  • He is the Dragon of – Revelation 20:1-2
  • He is the Evil One – Matthew 6:13
  • He is the Prince of the power of the air – Ephesians 2:1-2
  • He is the (little) ruler of this world – John 12:31
  • He is the Wicked One – I John 5:19
  • Worst of all. your father never slumbers, never ceases to do evil
  • He is always on the prowl, seeking whom he may devour.

Where does this leave you, then?

The Bible describes fallen humanity as spiritually wayward children...
  • Dead in trespasses and sins
  • Sons of disobedience - Eph. 2:2 & 5:6; Col. 3:6
  •  That are by nature, children of wrath - Eph 2:3
  • As without God and without hope - Eph 2:12
  • As hostile and at war with God - Eph 2:16
  • As living in loneliness
  •  As living in fearfulness
  • Living for self
  • As surviving by – hoarding the things of this world
  •  As unloving and unloved by your spiritual father
  •  As not just unwanted by their spiritual father, the Devil, as cast out, with no sense of belonging, but also as being hunted by him for the purpose of destruction.
  • The Bible represents fallen humanity as having no spiritual defense
  •  No spiritual provision
  •  No permanent spiritual shelter
  • Spiritually comfortless
  • Spiritually defiant
  • Spiritually dependent on the Devil
  • Spiritually without inheritance
  • Spiritually Dirty and unkempt - Spiritually clad in filthy rags

Can you see what a pathetic and dangerous position this is? Perhaps this was true of you in the past but now you've been rescued. Then glorify God and appreciate your adoption!

Praise God for the adoption that is in Jesus Christ! Praise God, the Helper of the Fatherless!

Soli Deo Gloria
